Threat Update at West Calder High School

In common with a number of schools across the UK, Bankton Primary School in Livingston received a threatening phone call this morning (Tuesday, 24 May).

“In consultation with Police Scotland, the school followed their emergency plan to calmly evacuate the school as a precaution. Pupils returned to the school a short time later after police had checked the school and declared it safe.

There has been no threat to West Calder High School at this time.

The school has robust procedures in place should any concern arise.

Upcoming Events

S5 Filmakers Edinburgh Festival Film 2016

Our budding S5 filmmakers Hollie Raeburn and Megan Archer were accompanied by Ms Thompson to attend the screening of their film, ‘The Next Steps’ at The Filmhouse Cinema, Edinburgh, on Friday 17th June. Their film, which featured S5 pupil Hannah Dickov was screened with other shortlisted entries at the Edinburgh Schools Competition, as part of the ‘Edinburgh Film Festival 2016.’  Both girls had attended a short, film-making course, which was run by Screen Education, Scotland with the film resulting from their hard-work and enthusiasm.

All entries to the competition were judged by a jury made up of young people from across the region, who worked closely with staff of Screen Education, Edinburgh to watch, curate and award the prizewinning films. Whilst the girls didn’t walk away with their own clapperboard on the day, they were given a great insight into the art of filmmaking, which should inspire them for future endeavours. Well done!

Edinburgh College Of Art Fashion and Degree Shows 2016

S3 Art and Design pupils visited the ECA Fashion Show on Wednesday 18th May. This hugely popular, sell-out show was very much enjoyed by our pupils and provoked great debate on the subject of fashion, performance costume and aesthetics in general. The themes explored were far ranging as was the media chosen. We are sure our pupils will now be inspired to further develop their own work as a result!

Recently, a number of our pupils, from S2 through to S5, participated in a visit to ECA Degree Show. The trip was a real success as our pupils were able to consider what creativity was and what it looked like and to challenge their own perceptions of this. It also allowed them to gather information and ask questions about the college as a possible future destination, with some of our pupils asking a range of questions of the students. The group were treated to a number of sessions with the Jewellery and Silversmithing department, during which the design process was explained. Our pupils left enlightened and excited about the possibilities for their own work!
